Teaching, Learning and Students

In these last few months of my term as Associated Dean for Teaching, Learning and Students for FMHS, I have been working with colleagues from across FMHS, FEPS and FLS to prepare for the management and delivery of our many and diverse UG and PGT programmes within the new formed Faculties of Biology, Medicine and Health (FBMH) and Science and Engineering (FSE).

Through all the challenges that any restructure will inevitably bring, our focus continues to be on maintaining the high quality of our programmes and ensuring that student learning and their experience of our programmes are not disrupted by the restructure. This is not however just the duty of those in leadership. It is the duty of us all irrespective of any new role we may be taking on or in which Faculty, School or Division we may be based from 1 August 2016.

Further, following the publication of the white paper on the Teaching Excellence Framework (see below), all aspects of the educational experience we provide our students will be assessed in the near future. I am delighted therefore with the appointment of four FBMH Deputy Associate Deans for Teaching, Learning and Students who will have responsibility for the key strategic areas of Staff Development (Judy Williams), Pedagogic Development (Caroline Bowsher), Student Experience (Christine Rogers) and Quality Assurance and Commissioning (Richard Baker) and who will lead our preparations for TEF. The Deputy Associate Deans will also contribute to shaping the Education and Professional Development Academy for FBMH and advance its mission to enhance Teaching and Learning standards. I have also started work on configuring a much-needed mechanism for the equitable distribution of teaching contribution across FBMH. To inform the development of this, I will be contacting UG and PG leads over the next few months so as to collate accurate data on current staff contributions to all of our programmes.

Alongside the work on Faculty reorganisation, the following is a brief update on the continuing activities, events and announcements that have occupied our UG Teaching and Learning Committee (UTLC), UG Leads and their Teams:
